Facebook: Part 2

For our second day with Facebook I will discuss, in detail, post comments and likes. I will disclose the overall page likes to give a feel of the fan-base. I hope to find out how many people are engaged in liking and commenting on band posts. I also hope to discover what types of posts draw the most attention. The four bands I am using are Grizzly Bear, The xx, Two Door Cinema Club, and Sea Wolf. Like Monday’s research, I chose four bands who do not get television or radio time.

I started with Grizzly Bear from Brooklyn, New York. They currently have 493,218 likes. Their fourth album, Shields, was released last September to overwhelming acclaim as it took home iTunes’ award for Best Album. Grizzly Bear’s rise to fame took many years as their sound has slowly been polished and taken form. I looked into their last 12 posts, which were collectively liked 15,871 times and commented upon 1,251 times. Five of the posts were liked over 1,000 times, but only three were commented on over 100 times. Their top three posts were 1) tour dates announced along side The xx, another popular indie band. 2) A beautiful Cape Cod image of an island–Shields was recorded nearby. 3) A special edition vinyl release of a collaborated album with two other artists. It seems fans like a) large tours with a lot of dates that span across the country, b) interesting images, c) new or unreleased material.

The posts that took in the most comments were the tour dates with The xx, a ticket contest, and Taiwanese concert updates. Highly liked posts did not necessarily result in a large number of comments. The question, however, is what brings in more likes and comments? Maybe to find the answer to that we need to look which posts are not getting looked at. A few of the weaker posts were when they announced tour dates in Kansas City, Florida, and Taiwan respectively. In comparison to announcing a huge slew of dates, these three posts apparently didn’t appeal to fans.

Alright, let’s move on to The xx, who hail from London. Their second album, Coexist, was released last September as well. They were nominated for Best British Band at the 2013 Brit Awards. While they can not be heard on the radio, they do have 1,999,752 likes. Much of that probably has to do with their British fan-base. Their last eight posts were liked a whopping 47,003 times, and commented upon 1,403. So, in comparison to Grizzly Bear, their material is overwhelmingly liked more, but their comment-to-like ratio (3.0%) is smaller than Grizzly Bear’s (7.9%). The xx has three times as many fans, but only a fraction more conversation brewing within posts. How come? 52.1% of those comments actually came from one specific post about five tour dates being added in Asia, as seen below. The xx is more willing to post images from the road, and shared links to other band’s work who may have covered some of their material. So far, I would have to say that people are more apt to liking and commenting on tour dates and, to a lesser extent, specialty images that peak people’s attention.

Next up is Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club. They are sitting 1,292, 505 likes. Not bad. They are better known overseas, but are getting some recognition in the States thanks to their second album, Beacon, which was released last September also. It debuted at number one in Ireland. Easily their highest liked post over the past two months was an image of a lager of Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day as shown below. Sad? Maybe, but they are Irish. Four other posts that were liked over 1,500 times were tour date related, which is nothing new. These were also the top commented posts as well. A picture of a band member surfing also brought over 3,000 likes. This trend is becoming very apparent. Fans like shows and images, not much else.

Our next band, Sea Wolf of Los Angeles, is not nearly as widely known as the three previous groups. They currently are liked by 73,868 people. Over the last ten posts they have received 1,010 likes and 44 comments. This is abysmal compared to others we looked at, but they are not a world-wide sensation like the others so it might be good to see what a smaller band is up to. Two of their posts brought in the majority of the likes. One is a picture of Alex Brown Church, the lead-singer, and the other is another image of Church with a link to a shirt-sale with the proceeds going to foster children. The majority of the other posts, which include tour updates, images, shared links, and donations received little to no attention. Despite Sea Wolf’s latest album, 2012’s Old World Romance, being a success they still haven’t quite found a large following on Facebook. That will probably never change unfortunately.

What this session has helped me realize is that the majority of fans want to see new tour dates or tour updates via images, announcements, quick posts from the road. The other thing they seem most drawn to is images that catch their attention–usually scenic or comical. Videos, shared links, personal information, and t-shirt sales fail in comparison. I also found out that you need a following if you want feedback. The xx and Two Door Cinema Club had no problem garnering likes and comments, but Grizzly Bear and especially Sea Wolf struggle in those departments because of their lack of a following. When we dive into other mediums in the following weeks we shall see if their following widens.
